Hill 70 Monument in Honour of Canadians Who Fought Opens to Public

OTTAWA, Ontario, Aug. 22, 2017 /CNW/ -- A new monument commemorating the 1917 Battle of Hill 70 was opened to the public today in Loos en Gohelle, France, marking the centenary of the historic battle. The monument, dedicated to those who bravely fought there in World War I, was a result of years of planning and coordination by a team of Canadian volunteers to honour this significant defining moment in Canadian history.

Sakto Corporation, a Canadian real estate company, proudly took on one of the many roles; coordinating the design and construction of the monument.

"The Battle of Hill 70 was a strategically important win where 1,877 lost their lives, however, it is often overlooked in Canadian military history," stated Sean Murray, President of Sakto Corporation and Ret'd Honourary Colonel. "That's why we helped start Project Hill 70 - to build this monument in honour of those who fought and to start an education campaign throughout Canada so that this victory will be preserved in Canadian history."

Project Hill 70, under the patronage of the Right Honourable David L. Johnston, Governor General of Canada and with a committee of dedicated, private citizens, led several initiatives to help define and pay tribute to the battle and make the monument a possibility including but not limited to educational packages, fundraising events that raised millions in private funds from corporations, charities, and individual Canadians, and coordination with French authorities.
