Harper Government Shows Support for Veterans and Men and Women in Uniform in Hamilton

HAMILTON, ON, Sept. 29, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today spoke to members of the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping (CAVUNP) at the Biennial Association General Meeting in Hamilton.

"I would like to thank the members of the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping for their commitment toward bettering the lives of our Veterans, men and women in uniform and all those who have served our country in peacekeeping missions around the world," said Minister Blaney. "Our Government is pleased to participate in important events like this one and show our support to our valued partners."

Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping members from across Canada gathered in Hamilton for three days of activities during the Biennial Association General Meeting, which includes deliberations, commemorative ceremonies and social activities.

"We thank Minister Blaney for his participation and value his consistent engagement on items of importance to Veterans," said Ron Griffis, National President of the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping.

"Through your hard work and dedication, you have helped to change the lives of those who have served and continue to serve our country in defence of the freedoms we enjoy today," added Minister Blaney.

Since 1947, United Nations forces have performed peacekeeping duties worldwide. Canada has always played an important role in those activities. Association members include serving and retired Canadian Military, RCMP and civilian Veterans of United Nations Peacekeeping missions, other non-UN missions established under UN Resolutions and peacekeeping missions sanctioned by the Government of Canada.
