Harper Government Invests in the Fête des Chants de Marins

SAINT-JEAN-PORT-JOLI, QC, July 10, 2012 /CNW/ - An investment from the Government of Canada will allow residents and visitors in the Chaudière-Appalaches region to once again enjoy the rich programming of the Fête des chants de marins. This investment will boost the economy and the tourism sector in the Saint-Jean-Port-Joli region. This was announced today by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages.

This funding is for the 14th edition of the Fête des chants de marins, which features diverse artistic performances that highlight maritime heritage and the majestic St. Lawrence River, from August 16 to 19. Close to 80 local artists and historical performers will be featured, roughly 200 volunteers will ensure the event runs smoothly, and more than 20,000 visitors are expected.

"Our Government received a strong mandate from Canadians to invest in artistic activities like Fête des chants de marins," said Minister Moore. "Organizations devoted to culture and local heritage contribute to the growth of our communities and the quality of life of all Quebecers. By supporting these activities, our Government is delivering on its commitment to strengthen our communities and support our arts, culture, and heritage."

The Fête des chants de marins aims to promote the culture and folklore traditions associated with the St. Lawrence River and to highlight the various aspects of Quebec's maritime history.

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $9,600 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
