OTTAWA, May 28, 2019 /CNW/ - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, will be in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, on May 30, 2019.
During this visit, the Governor General will take part in a Dedication to Service Ceremony of the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Captain Molly Kool. Her Excellency will address the students of École des Grands-Vents and École Rocher-du-Nord on the occasion of Provincial Francophonie Day. Finally, she will take advantage of her time in St. John's to present two individuals with the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers.

Dedication to Service Ceremony of the CCGS Captain Molly Kool
Her Excellency will take part in a Dedication to Service Ceremony to officially commission the CCGS Captain Molly Kool. Her Honour the Honourable Judy May Foote, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador—and the first woman to serve in this role—has accepted to be the sponsor of the vessel and will take part in the event. The Governor General will deliver remarks.
The CCGS Captain Molly Kool is an icebreaker named after the late Captain Molly Kool. In 1939, she became the first woman in North America to attain the certification of Master of a Cargo Steamship in the Home Trade, one of the highest levels of qualification that could be achieved in the seagoing profession at that time.

Presentation to the students of École des Grands-Vents and École Rocher-du-Nord
On the occasion of Provincial Francophonie Day, the Governor General will invite students to dare to dream while talking about her role as governor general and her background as an astronaut.
École des Grands-Vents offers free, French first language instruction from kindergarten to Grade 6 as well as the Head Start program to prepare children for entry into kindergarten. École Rocher-du-Nord is the only French-language school for students in Grades 7 to 12 in St. John's, Newfoundland. It opened its doors on September 6, 2017. Helen Cleary-Escott fosters youth development and establishes programs that benefit diverse socio-economic backgrounds through her volunteerism with the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award, Easter Seals House and the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. She also volunteers with St. Mark's Anglican Church and the Church Lads' Brigade.
