OTTAWA, Nov. 8, 2018 /CNW/ - Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, will commemorate Remembrance Day and the 100th anniversary of the Armistice of the First World War at events in both Canada and Belgium. On November 10, 2018, she will attend ceremonies in Mons and Le Roeulx, Belgium, to pay homage to our country's efforts in the liberation of Europe during the Great War. She will then return to Canada for the National Remembrance Day Ceremony at the National War Memorial, in Ottawa, on November 11.
Throughout the events in Belgium, Her Excellency will be joining a delegation of 50 veterans, young Canadians and the 2017 National Silver Cross Mother, Ms. Diana Abel. Below is the Governor General's detailed itinerary (listed in local times):

Remembrance Ceremony at the St. Symphorien Military Cemetery
Her Excellency will lay flowers on the tomb of Private George Lawrence Price, of the Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment), who is believed to be the last Canadian soldier to die in battle two minutes before the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918. The Governor General will also lay a wreath on behalf of Canada and speak on the importance of remembering those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom.
Established by the German Army during the First World War, the cemetery is the final resting place for Commonwealth and German soldiers killed at the Battle of Mons. Among the buried is Private Price. For more information, visit www.cwgc.org.

Inauguration of and Commemorative Ceremony at the George Price Monument
The Governor General, along with other dignitaries, will attend the inauguration of a monument in honour of Private Price. The monument is located in Ville-sur-Haine, in the Municipality of Le Roeulx, where he fell on November 11, 1918. On behalf of Canada, Her Excellency will also lay a wreath and deliver remarks.

Laying Flowers at Mons City Hall and Meeting with Mayor
The Governor General will lay flowers at Mons City Hall, at the foot of a plaque presented to Mons by the Canadian Government in 1927, in recognition of the Canadian troops' extraordinary accomplishment in liberating the city on November 11. She will then sign the city's golden book and meet with the Mayor of Mons, Elio di Rupo.

Luncheon for the National Silver Cross Mother
Her Excellency will host a luncheon at Rideau Hall to pay tribute to the 2018 National Silver Cross Mother, Ms. Anita Cenerini, who lost her son, Private Thomas Welch, on May 8, 2004. This marks the first time the Royal Canadian Legion has appointed a mother who lost her child to suicide as the Silver Cross Mother."
The National Memorial (Silver) Cross Mother is chosen annually from nominations submitted to The Royal Canadian Legion to represent the mothers of Canada at the National Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa on November 11. The Silver Cross Mother places a wreath at the base of the National War Memorial on behalf of all mothers whose children died while serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.
