Minister Leitch announces federal support for Mompreneurs to help women grow and succeed their businesses
OTTAWA, July 31, 2015 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Canada's Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, announced Government of Canada funding for a new project to help women entrepreneurs succeed in Canada.
Mompreneurs is receiving $118,960 for a 12-month project that will increase economic prosperity for women in Canada by supporting women entrepreneurs. This project will help to foster successful business practices for women entrepreneurs who are at various stages of business development across the country. On-line and in-person education-based resources, workshops, webinars, and roundtables will be created throughout Mompreneur's regional chapters to identify strategies that help women better access to educational resources and tools for growing their businesses. An online portal will also be developed to facilitate access to national supports and resources for women entrepreneurs.
- As part of Economic Action Plan 2015, the Government of Canada will create and execute an Action Plan for Women Entrepreneurs to help more women start and grow their businesses. The Government of Canada has also committed to implementing measures that will ensure increased representation of women in leadership roles within some of Canada's largest companies.
- Economic Action Plan 2015 committed to modernizing Canada's corporate governance framework. This would include proposed amendments to the Canada Business Corporations Act to promote gender diversity among public companies using the "comply or explain" model of disclosure.
- Since 2007, the Government of Canada has invested over $162 million through Status of Women Canada in support of more than 780 community-based projects across Canada. This includes over $14 million for projects that support women in entrepreneurship.
"We know that when women succeed, Canada succeeds. That is why we are proud to support outstanding organizations like The Mompreneur as they work to help create more women-owned businesses across the country."
