PRINCE RUPERT, BC, Aug. 27, 2026 /CNW/ -- Strong, reliable supply chains are essential to Canada's economic growth and global competitiveness. That is why the Government of Canada is investing in transportation infrastructure that improves the efficient movement of goods across the country and to international markets.
Today, the Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, the Honourable Steven MacKinnon, celebrated the grand opening of the CANXPORT facility, formerly known as the Ridley Island Export Logistics Project, at the Port of Prince Rupert in British Columbia. Supported in part by a Government of Canada investment of nearly $50 million through the National Trade Corridors Fund (NTCF), the new facility will increase Canada's export capacity, strengthen key trade corridors and help Canadian goods reach global markets.
The NTCF investment supported the expansion of the existing road and rail infrastructure for three inbound, and three outbound rail tracks dedicated to export transloading. This infrastructure will increase rail capacity, improve connections between rail and marine transportation, and help Canadian products move to international markets more quickly and reliably.
The opening of CANXPORT marks a significant milestone for Canada's trade infrastructure. Located on Ridley Island, British Columbia, the new facility is designed to handle at least 400,000 shipping containers each year, with the potential to increase capacity to 750,000, and will support exports such as forestry products, agricultural products, and plastic resins.
By expanding capacity at the Port of Prince Rupert and making better use of industrial lands on Ridley Island, CANXPORT will improve supply chain resilience, support trade diversification and create new opportunities for Canadian exporters.
Being North America's closest port to Asia, the Port of Prince Rupert plays a critical role in connecting Canadian businesses to international markets. In 2025, the port handled 26.3 million tonnes of cargo, a 14 per cent increase over 2024. It is Canada's third-busiest container port and fourth-busiest port authority by tonnage.
Through the NTCF, the Government of Canada is investing in strategic infrastructure that improves the flow of goods, strengthens supply chains and supports long-term economic growth across the country.
