Government of Canada invests in promising young researchers, social sciences and humanities partnerships

Minister Duclos celebrates more than $12 million for research at Université Laval

QUÉBEC, Nov. 10, 2016 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada values the role of all scientific disciplines, from the natural and health sciences to the social sciences and humanities, in providing the evidence needed to make decisions that will impact our health, environment, climate, economy and society. The government is committed to advancing research in all disciplines and to encouraging partnerships among researchers—along with stakeholders in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors—to develop innovative approaches that will improve the well-being of Canadians and strengthen the middle class.

That is why the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, on behalf of the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science, celebrated more than $12 million in support for science at Université Laval. The Minister honoured Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship recipients as well as recipients of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada's Partnership and Insight Grants.

The investment in these initiatives will help researchers examine a wide range of issues that touch the everyday lives of Canadians, including employment, the aging population and immigration. For example, through his Insight Grant project, Université Laval's Dr. Jean-Michel Beaudoin is contributing to the economic development of Indigenous communities in Canada by developing a better understanding of how to help Indigenous forestry companies succeed.

Through these grant and scholarship programs, the Government of Canada supports the development of important research partnerships and strengthens the ability of Canadian universities to attract and retain world-class research talent.

• On September 9, 2016, Minister Duncan announced the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada's contribution of $163 million through the Partnership Grants, Partnership Development Grants, Insight Grants and Insight Development Grants to support nearly 1,150 research projects in universities across Canada.
• On October 3, Minister Duncan and Minister Philpott announced 166 new Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship recipients and 70 new Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship recipients.
• The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada is the federal research funding agency that promotes and supports post-secondary research and training in the humanities and social sciences. It supports about 8,300 research projects annually.
• Both the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships program and the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program are funded through the three federal granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
