Gold Coast 2018 - Day 1 (April 5) results and looking ahead at Team Canada action on day 2

7 medals for Canada on Day 1:  1 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze

GOLD COAST, Australia, April 5, 2018 /CNW/ -

Swimming – Taylor Ruck won Canada's first gold of the Games at the Optus Aquatic Centre with His Royal Highness Prince Charles in attendance. Ruck touched the wall in the 200m freestyle, 0.04 seconds ahead of her nearest rival. The swimmers capped off their first finals' evening with two silver medals -  Sarah Mehain in para-swimming (S7, 50m fly) and the women's 4x100 freestyle relay – a race in which the Australians set a new world record.

Gymnastics – The men's gymnastics team took silver, an improvement on their Glasgow 2014 bronze medal performance, and in addition, qualified eleven athletes for the individual apparatus and all-around finals.

Triathlon – Joanna Brown set the tone early with Canada's first medal of the Games, a bronze in triathlon, with an amazing push during the two-lap final run portion, followed by a sprint to the finish line. The 25-year-old was participating in her first Commonwealth Games, and competing just one month after fracturing her shoulder during a race.

Cycling – Team Pursuit – both the men and women were on the podium in the Team Pursuit, with the men defeating the 4^th qualifying Welsh Team, and the women over England for the last podium spot. It was a fast night at the Velodrome for the Team Pursuit, with the host Aussies setting two new records: a world record for the men and a new Commonwealth standard for women.

LOOKING AHEAD AT TEAM CANADA ACTION ON DAY 2 – APRIL 6, 2018

Canada's 7 Medals from Day 1 Inspire Team Canada as we look forward to Day 2!

A total of 16 medal events are on the day's calendar, with highlights being:

• Artistic Gymnastics - Women's team event – after missing out on medals at Glasgow 2014, the women are focused on getting back onto the podium in Gold Coast. World all-around silver medallist Ellie Black will be joined by Shallon Olsen, Isabela Onyshko, Brittany Rogers and Jade Chrobok in their team medal quest on Day 2.
• Cycling – with two women ranked in the Commonwealth's top 5 in the 3000m Individual Pursuit, Canada will definitely be in the medal hunt in this event at the Anna Meares Velodrome, set to start at 7:30pm in Brisbane.
• Swimming – Watch for Tristan Cote in the 400m Individual Medley to contend for a podium position, with Markus Thormeyer earning his spot in the 100m backstroke final by posting the fastest time in his semi. And keep an eye on the men's 4x100m freestyle relay, with Canada's foursome ranked 2^nd in the Commonwealth.
• Weightlifting – Two women's weight categories are on the calendar for Canada: 53kg (Rachel Leblanc-Bazinet) and 58kg (Tali Darsigny). Canada has a good chance to medal in the 58kg.
