Global Open Source Leader, Eclipse Foundation, Selects Granite Networks for Primary Data Centre
OTTAWA, June 17, 2013 /CNW/ - Eclipse, one of the world's leading open source communities, has selected Granite Networks as its primary data centre facility. Built to Tier 3 standards, Granite Networks' Ottawa data centre includes multiple certifications and provides 100% redundant mechanical, electrical and networking facilities.
Eclipse is a global community whose members collaborate on commercially friendly open source software. Eclipse membership includes some of the world's leading corporations, including: Airbus, Blackberry, BMW, Cisco, eBay, Google, HP, IBM, Intel, Nokia, Oracle and SAP. In 2012, the Eclipse annual release train included over 55 million lines of code via seventy-two project teams.
"Eclipse's continually expanding requirements for power and bandwidth, along with ever-tightening budgets, forced us to look at other options for our data centre needs," said Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation. "We selected Granite Networks because they are a Tier 3 data centre that has the capacity to easily handle our rapidly evolving power and connectivity demands. We were impressed by Granite's commitment to meeting our needs and their willingness to customize and manage our power, air conditioning and network requirements."
The Eclipse technology is a vendor-neutral, open development platform supplying frameworks and extensible tools. Eclipse Platform tools are exemplary in that they verify the utility of the Eclipse frameworks, illustrate the appropriate use of those frameworks, and support the development and maintenance of the Eclipse Platform itself; Eclipse Platform tools are extensible in that their functionality is accessible via documented programmatic interfaces. The purpose of Eclipse Foundation is to advance the creation, evolution, promotion, and support of the Eclipse Platform and to cultivate both an open source community and an ecosystem of complementary products, capabilities and services.
The Eclipse Foundation provides four core services to the global Eclipse community: IT infrastructure, IP management, development processes and ecosystem development. "Our members include some of the most technologically advanced companies on the planet," said Milinkovich. "We know and expect that our core server infrastructure must continue to evolve to support the enormous growth we are seeing in global membership demands. In fact, we've seen our traffic maintain a steady 200 Mbps at Granite and our servers didn't miss a single beat."
"Granite Networks' Ottawa data centre was purposely built to meet and surpass the increasingly complex computing and internet infrastructure requirements that are the de facto standard for world class organizations like the Eclipse Foundation and its membership," said Granite Networks CEO Rainer Paduch.
"Although perhaps not well known to the general business community, Eclipse is playing a leadership role in facilitating global innovation across a multitude of industries," said Paduch. "We are particularly proud that much of Eclipse's underlying internet infrastructure serves the global marketplace while being hosted in Granite's Ottawa data centre."
