VANCOUVER, July 6 /CNW/ - Following three boating fatalities this past week, BOATsmart! Canada, this country's national boating educator, is encouraging boaters to take some simple steps to be safe this summer.
"Regrettably we've experienced the tragic loss of three lives in Canada as a result of boating mishaps this past week. We encourage all Canadians to prepare for a safe trip on the water - take a boating course, be sure you understand how to boat safely and know your responsibilities. And remember: Wearing an approved lifejacket or PFD is one of the easiest things you can do to be safe this season", says Cameron Taylor, spokesperson for BOATsmart! Canada.
More than 200 boating related fatalities and 6,000 non-fatal accidents occur each year on Canadian waterways - most of which are preventable.
The best prevention is knowledge. Boaters are encouraged to take a boating safety course online or in-class to obtain their Pleasure Craft Operator Card, as a means to ensure they have the knowledge to boat safely. Boaters caught without their PCOC risk a minimum $250 fine.
The PCOC regulations apply to boaters of all ages and all engine sizes, including small electric trolling motors and boats equipped with motors less than 10hp. Enforcement officers have been quick to point out that the warning period is over, and they are currently fining boaters who fail to produce a PCOC.
Boaters must pass a 36 question multiple choice exam in order to obtain their Operator Card. Those taking the exam online at www.BoatSmartExam.com can print a temporary slip immediately when they pass - ensuring they can be legal on the spot.
"Its more than just about getting a Pleasure Craft Operator Card to avoid the fine. BOATsmart! Canada encourages boaters to participate in a boating safety course and ensure they gain the knowledge they need to keep themselves and their fellow boaters safe this summer", says Taylor.
British Columbians can take a recognized boating safety course where they'll learn the knowledge necessary to pass the exam and be safe on the water. A complete listing of classroom courses is available online at www.BoatSmartExam.com.
If you've lost your PCOC you can obtain a replacement card immediately from BOATsmart! Canada. The organization manages a national database of Pleasure Craft Operator Cards, which can be ordered online at www.BoatSmartExam.com or by calling toll free 1-877-792-3926.
