- Country to country carsharing planned for later this year
VANCOUVER, British Columbia, July 5, 2012 /CNW/ - Starting today, car2go Canada Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Daimler North America Corporation, will give all car2go members in Canada access to its network of fuel-efficient smart fortwo cars in all car2go cities within the country – including Vancouver, Toronto, and starting later this month in Calgary.
"Step by step, we are making it possible for our members to have access to a car2go in every car2go city worldwide," said Nicholas Cole, President & CEO of car2go Canada. "As we continue to expand into more cities within North America and around the world, we are working to make carsharing more flexible for our members."
Now, car2go customers in Canada will have the flexibility of being able to use their car2go membership card when they travel to other car2go cities within the country. car2go also announced today that members in the United States will be able to use their car2go memberships in any U.S. car2go city as well. By the end of the year, car2go expects to bring country to country access to its customers in North America.
There are currently more than 50,000 car2go members in North America and more than 120,000 car2go members worldwide. Globally, more than two million trips have been taken in a car2go since its inception in 2008.
A wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler, car2go offers an innovative mobility solution redefining individual transportation in rapidly growing urban areas by offering a network of several hundred environment-friendly smart fortwo vehicles for rent. car2go is currently operational in 12 cities: Austin, Texas; Vancouver, British Columbia; San Diego, California; Washington, D.C.; Portland, Oregon; Toronto, Ontario; Ulm, Germany; Hamburg, Germany; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Vienna, Austria; Dusseldorf, Germany; and Berlin, Germany. In November 2011, car2go launched the world's largest all-electric vehicle carsharing network in the cities of San Diego, California, and Amsterdam, Netherlands, with the deployment of 300 car2go smart fortwo electric drive vehicles in each city. In July 2012, car2go will launch in the cities of Calgary and Miami. Currently, there are more than 120,000 ca car2go members worldwide.
The innovation and environmental sustainability of car2go have earned international acclaim: In February 2012, car2go was named the "Best Carshare of 2011" by the Vancouver Courier. In September 2010, car2go was recognized by the Austin Chamber of Commerce with the "2010 Greater Austin Business Award" for its positive impact on traffic in the city.
