TORONTO, Nov. 6, 2026 /CNW/ -- FP Canada welcomes the federal government's efforts in its 2026 budget to support Canadians during a period of economic uncertainty and strengthen Canada's position in the global economy. However, more can be done to support long-term financial well-being at the household level.
In particular, FP Canada was pleased to see the government state that "We recognise that building a more affordable life means reducing uncertainty for Canadians wherever it arises. Canadians need confidence that they can manage their finances, plan for the future, and access the care they need when illness or injury occurs. When Canadians have access to reliable financial and health supports, they can navigate life's changes and challenges without falling behind."
As encouraging as this sentiment is, nearly three in four Canadians experience some level of financial vulnerability, based on the Financial Resilience Institute's findings. At the same time, the evidence shows that professional financial planning can make a meaningful difference. Households working with a financial planner had an average financial resilience score of 62.5, compared with 49.2 among households not working with one, a difference of 13.3 points.
In August 2026, FP Canada commissioned a survey of more than 2,000 Canadians by Pollara Research. The research found that 71% of respondents worry about healthcare costs as they age, 65% worry about retirement savings and 67% say wages have not kept pace with the cost of living, and only 34% of Canadians feel the government is helping people achieve greater financial stability.
"While broader economic measures are important, Canadians also need practical support to strengthen their long-term financial well-being at the household level," said Tashia Batstone, President and CEO of FP Canada. "Professional financial planning can help Canadians make informed decisions about their finances, navigate increasing uncertainty and build greater confidence in their financial futures."
FP Canada continues to advocate for a federal financial planning grant that would help low- and middle-income Canadians access a first comprehensive financial plan and receive support to implement and update it. The proposed grant would help participants take practical steps to reduce debt, build emergency savings, prepare for retirement, and plan for education costs.
