"This year's TELUS World Skins Game is going to be very special," said Gen. (Ret.) Rick Hillier, Chair of the TELUS Atlantic Canada Community Board. "The chance to bring world-class players like Paul Casey, Anthony Kim and Jhonattan Vegas to Halifax for the first time, while celebrating the event's 20th anniversary, will be a thrill for the players and Atlantic Canada's golf fans alike."
The remaining players in the field will be announced in the coming weeks.
"The fan response in Halifax since announcing Glen Arbour as the host site has been incredible," said Danny Fritz, Vice President and Co-Managing Director of IMG Canada. "With our pre-sale, and sponsor allocations, we've already sold out half of the available tickets, so we're encouraging fans in Halifax to get their tickets early so they're not disappointed."
"I can't wait to visit Halifax this summer, and for the chance to defend my TELUS World Skins Game title," said Vegas, who defeated Kim, Casey, Stephen Ames and Lucas Glover for the 2011 title at the Fairmont Banff Springs. "I know for a lot of us, last year was our first opportunity to play in the TELUS World Skins Game, and we had a great time. The fans were fantastic, and you can tell that they appreciate their golf. I've heard wonderful things about Halifax and Atlantic Canada, so it's going to be a fun few days."
The TELUS World Skins Game is always a highlight of the Canadian summer sporting schedule for the country's most passionate golf fans, as well as the community that hosts it. Fulfilling its promise to "give where we live," the TELUS World Skins Game has raised more than $10.4 million since 2001 for a wide variety of important causes across Canada.
"Nike Golf is thrilled to continue our long-time support of the TELUS World Skins Game, and to bring these world-class golfers to one of Canada's most beautiful golf and tourist destinations," said Vitalis Gomes, Director of Marketing at Nike Golf Canada. "We're looking forward to celebrating the 20th anniversary of the event with the golf fans in Halifax and to making it one of the best events yet."
The first Skins Game was held in 1993 at Devil's Pulpit Golf Club in Caledon, Ontario, and during its 19-year history has seen some of the biggest names in professional golf compete at Canada's top golf destinations, including Jack Nicklaus, Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, Mike Weir and Greg Norman. Glen Arbour Golf Course is one of Atlantic Canada's premiere golf destinations.
Glen Arbour Golf Course is owned and operated by Annapolis Group Inc. a land development company whose roots dates back to the 1930's, currently owned by the Hennigar Family, descendants of the late Roy Jodrey, the company's founder. Since opening in 1999, Glen Arbour has played host to a number of prestigious golf events including the inaugural Wayne Gretzky and Friends Invitational in 2000 and the BMO Canadian Ladies Open in 2005.
