First 'Go by Bike' event debuts in BC Oct 15-29 - bike to work, school or anywhere
Participants can qualify to win Exodus Travels' 8 day cycling trip to Italy*
VANCOUVER, Oct. 10, 2018 /CNW/ - "I actually prefer cycling in the winter, feeling the rain on my face and just feeling it is great to be alive," says Vancouver Island resident Nancy Gothard. Gothard features in several short videos produced by the GoByBikeBC Society to encourage cycling instead of taking the car for transportation trips in the fall and winter months. It is all part of a brand new event-GoByBike Weeks, Oct 15-29.
"The idea behind our new two-week event is to promote 'going by bike' in fall and winter, instead of taking your car, whether you bike to yoga, to shop, to meet friends or to work, school or anywhere," says GoByBikeBC's executive Director, Penny Noble. The Society, formerly known as Bike to Work BC has changed both its name and look to encourage cycling as a means of transportation whatever the purpose of the trip.
"A fall event is something we have wanted for a few years, in addition to our traditional spring Bike to Work and School Week," says Noble. "Thanks to funding from Island Health, the Province of BC and EXODUS travels we can now make the fall event a reality for 2018."
The grand prize is an eight day cycling trip to Sicily, Italy, courtesy of Exodus Travels. The new fall GoByBike event, including Bike to Work or School is open free to anyone of any age and there are other great prizes including for new riders and their team leaders.
When riding in the fall and winter it is important to be visible and safe, use lights even in the day time, and keep dry. "Fenders are critical," says Nancy Gothard, "especially if you are wearing work clothes. I put on what I am going to wear to work, no special clothes, but I do have a good rain jacket and a bright vest, and I always keep rain pants in my panier just in case, and I get good looking shoes and boots that stay dry."
Taryn Silver mother of two agrees, "We don't use anything fancy, just the regular rain jackets, hats and gloves we have around the house already. My kids love riding to school year-round. I got an E-bike when they were young and I was riding them up steep hills!"
