TORONTO, March 14, 2013 /CNW/ - The Globe and Mail leads all newspapers in Canada with 15 finalists in the 64th National Newspaper Awards competition, followed by La Presse of Montreal with 12 and the Toronto Star with nine.

The Canadian Press finished with five finalists, followed by the Edmonton Journal, The Vancouver Sun and Winnipeg Free Press with three each.

The Hamilton Spectator, National Post, Ottawa Citizen and Postmedia News had two each.

Single nominations went to Barrie Examiner, Brandon Sun, Brantford Expositor, Huffington Post, Kamloops Daily News, Le Journal de Montreal, London Free Press, Montreal Gazette, Reuters, St. John's Telegram, St. Catharines Standard, Saskatoon StarPhoenix, Waterloo Region Record, Victoria Times Colonist. The Ottawa Citizen and Postmedia News had a joint entry among the nominations.

The 72 finalists in the 22 categories were announced on March 13, 2013, from the National Newspaper Awards office in Toronto. There were 1,430 entries in this year's competition for works that appeared in the year 2012. In all, 26 news organizations have been nominated.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Ottawa at the Canadian War Museum on Friday, May 3. Winners will receive cheques for $1,000 and a certificate of award. Runners-up receive citations of merit.

This is the 24th year for the NNAs under a Board of Governors which includes editors, publishers and the public from across Canada as well as representatives from the Toronto Press Club. Previous to 1989, the NNAs had been sponsored by the Toronto Press Club. The awards are administered from the National Newspaper Awards office in Toronto.

The National Newspaper Awards were founded by The Toronto Press Club in 1949.

Highlights:

  • Brian Gable of The Globe and Mail has been nominated for a 13th time. He has won cartooning six times.
  • Stephanie Nolen of The Globe and Mail has been nominated a 12th time. She is a six-time winner of a NNA.
  • Serge Chapleau of La Presse in Montreal has been nominated for a 12th time in editorial cartooning. He has won 6 times.
  • Tyler Anderson of the National Post has been nominated for two NNAs in photography.
  • Michèle Ouimet of La Presse in Montreal has been nominated for a seventh time. She is a two-time winner of a NNA.
  • Doug Saunders of The Globe and Mail has been nominated for a sixth time. He has won four times.
  • Mark Blinch of Reuters has been nominated for a second straight year in photography.
  • John Roe of the Waterloo Region Record has been nominated for a second straight year in editorial writing.

The nominees:

  • Multimedia Feature: La Presse of Montreal for a multimedia voyage along the Mississippi River; The Canadian Press for its Census Project that looked at Canada's changing society; The Globe and Mail for a multimedia examination of post-secondary education in Canada; Winnipeg Free Press for a portrait of an international humanitarian and medical mission.
  • News Feature Photography: Tyler Anderson, National Post, for a photo of a worker snoozing in the back during a Mayor Rob Ford speech at a Toronto Real Estate Board gathering; Aaron Vincent Elkaim of The Canadian Press, for a photo of the mother of a slain teenager taken through a hearse's open window; Lyle Stafford of the Victoria Times-Colonist for a photo of a photo of Justin Trudeau's casual talk at the University of Victoria.
  • Beat Reporting: Jim Bronskill, The Canadian Press, for stories using Access to Information; Sharon Kirkey, Postmedia News, for her health beat; Heather Scoffield, The Canadian Press, for stories on aboriginal affairs; Mary Agnes Welch, Winnipeg Free Press, for her public policy coverage.
  • Explanatory Work: James Bagnall of the Ottawa Citizen for a story on the intricate meltdown of Nortel; Ian Brown of The Globe and Mail for a story on forgiveness; Mary Ormsby of the Toronto Star for an examination of why horses win big races.
