Federal government invests in safer active transportation in Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation

TREATY ONE TERRITORY, ROSEAU RIVER ANISHINABE FIRST NATION, MB, Oct. 1, 2026 /CNW/ -- The Government of Canada is investing $2.6 million in multi-use pathways to create safer, more accessible transportation options for people walking and cycling in Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation.

The project will include pedestrian road crossings, energy-efficient LED lighting, signage, benches and tree plantings to improve safety and accessibility along the new pathways.

The new routes will connect key community amenities and services for youth, seniors, people with disabilities, pedestrians and cyclists. The project will also support Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation's broader active transportation network and promote healthy, active travel.

• The federal government is investing $2,600,000 in this project through the Active Transportation Fund (ATF).
• The ATF supports projects that build new and expanded networks of pathways, sidewalks, bike lanes and trails to support affordable, greener, and healthier options for Canadians to access their communities by walking, cycling, and through the use of human-powered or hybrid mobility aids such as wheelchairs, scooters, e-bikes, rollerblades, snowshoes, cross-country skis, and more. 
• A minimum of 10% of ATF's funding is allocated to projects that benefit Indigenous populations and communities.
• The ATF supports the National Active Transportation Strategy, the country's first strategic approach for promoting active transportation and its benefits. It uses data-driven and evidence-based investments to build new and expanded active transportation networks, while supporting equitable and sustainable travel options.
