Federal election fact check on party plans to save Canada Post

OTTAWA, Oct.13, 2015 /CNW/ - Two of the major federal parties need to be clearer about their positions on postal service cuts in order to avoid misleading the public, according to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.

"The Conservative claim that these cuts are necessary is scaremongering at its worst,"said CUPW National President Mike Palecek. "The fact is Canada Post has made over $2 billion in profits in the last 19 years and contributed over $1 billion in income tax and dividends to government coffers."

He said, "The Liberals are pretty cagey about their plans to save Canada Post."

The Liberal party has indicated it would, if elected, stop the home mail delivery cuts and then review Canada Post's business plan.

"The problem is the Liberals could decide to proceed with the cuts after looking at the corporation's books. At the very least, we would encourage the party to commit to a full public review so that Canadians are able to have input into the future of their public postal service," said Palecek.

"To date, the NDP is the only major political party to promise to stop the home mail delivery cuts and restore delivery to people who have lost it," said Palecek.

If elected, the NDP would also look at expanding revenue-generating services, like profitable postal administrations around the world.

"CUPW agrees that revenue generation, not cuts, is the only sensible way to ensure the future of Canada Post," said Palecek.
