The opening of the new CBSA integrated traffic and commercial building and associated civil works at Thousand Islands Bridge will mark the completion of phase one of the project. Announced in April 2013, the project was financed through the Gateways and Border Crossings Fund to expand and redesign of the existing CBSA facility.

The project involved:

  • demolition of the current primary-inspection-lanes, main CBSA traffic and commercial buildings and their ancillary operational spaces;
  • construction of  new traffic and commercial primary-inspection-lanes, an integrated traffic and commercial building and ancillary operational  spaces, including lease space for brokers and Nexus operations;
  • new infrastructure including water, sewer, hydro and communications; and
  • construction of a small utility service building incorporating power and communication distribution, bridge operations, maintenance and storage.

FBCL President and Chief Executive Officer, Micheline Dubé, wishes to emphasize that "FBCL is extremely proud of the new state-of-the-art facilities it has built in Lansdowne to service the needs of CBSA and the travelling public.  A similar project is also ongoing in Sault Ste. Marie and we expect that both of these modern, contemporary sites will be completed this fall"

With the completion of this crucial phase of the project, the new facility will contribute significantly to the ongoing bridge safety, security and border infrastructure renewal. Phase two of the project including the demolition of the existing traffic building, construction of six remaining traffic primary-inspection-lanes and construction of the staff parking lot is planned to be completed for December 2017.
