Quebec families are most likely to eat dinner together, while Atlantic Canadian families are least likely
BRAMPTON, ON, Feb. 20, 2013 /CNW/ -TSX:L: Eight-in-ten (82%) Canadian families are sitting down at least four times a week for family dinners. Two-thirds (66%) of these families are also making healthier eating choices reveals a survey* conducted for Loblaw Companies Limited just as the grocer launches its Bring Healthier Home™ campaign on February 22. The survey looks at how often families eat together, when parents teach their children about food and some of the choices Canadians make to eat healthier.
"Getting together for family meals is a habit that we should always encourage," says Alexis Williams, registered dietitian and director, health and wellness at Loblaw Companies Limited. "Mealtime is a great opportunity to familiarize children with cooking and have fun while instilling good eating habits. Encouraging such habits can have a significant impact on our health, which is why it is essential to integrate sensible food choices and nutritional solutions into your lifestyle."
- The biggest obstacle in getting to the dinner table together is work schedules (68%) followed by demands from children's after school activities (34%).
- Overall, Canadian families report to be focused on the following areas in an effort to be healthier: eating more fresh foods (40%), reducing sugar intake (31%), reducing fat intake (28%) and reducing sodium intake (23%).
- Canadian families estimate that about two-thirds (69%) of their total grocery purchases are made up of what they would consider to be healthier eating options.
- Six-in-ten parents teach kids about nutritious choices while grocery shopping and sixty-three per cent of parents do so while prepping meals.
