Alternative asset managers partner in providing attractive risk-adjusted returns for clients
TORONTO, Dec. 11, 2014 /CNW/ - Toronto-based asset management firms East West Investment Management and SW8 have agreed to combine their broad-based skills and deep expertise in providing investment solutions that seek to grow capital without excessive risk under one roof.
"By joining forces we have created a larger professional team with diverse and institutional investment disciplines and experience," commented Richard Phillips, founder and CEO of East West. "I am excited to work with Matt who has demonstrated over the past five years with SW8 his unique ability to navigate tough markets and to seek uncorrelated opportunity for investors."
Matt Skipp, founder of SW8 said: "As a former global head of a large Canadian bank's proprietary trading, Richard has been responsible for a wide range of investment strategies and he has built a highly skilled team at East West that we are excited to partner with. We share the goal of providing an investment solution for clients that will generate attractive risk-adjusted returns in various market conditions. Both of us stand behind what we do and we manage a significant amount of our personal wealth alongside our clients."
Brian Shaw, former chairman and CEO of CIBC World Markets Inc., and a member of East West's advisory board, further commented: "This is a very positive move for both firms, who share a common approach to business and to investing. Both of the existing funds have solid market histories and together the expanded team will be commanding and well-positioned to expand the alternative investment solutions they can offer clients."
East West and SW8 manage money for high-net-worth individuals, families and third-party advisors. The East West Canada Fund and the SW8 Strategy Fund will continue to exist as they had previously, and they will continue to be managed independently.
The East West Canada Fund is a portfolio of primarily Canadian large cap equities constructed using a systematic, rules-based strategy. Prior to founding East West, Phillips was Deputy Chairman and Head of Global Capital Markets at CIBC World Markets.
The SW8 Strategy Fund is a long/short equity fund focused on listed Canadian and U.S. securities. Top-down macro themes and fundamental stock analysis are used to construct a portfolio of equities that look to profit in various market conditions. Prior to launching SW8, Skipp held senior trading positions for RBC Capital Markets in Toronto, Vancouver and London, UK and was a Managing Director and Head of Trading at Blackmont Capital.
