MONTREAL, Feb. 13, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Dr. Alain Moreau has been named Director for Research at the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Center (Sainte-Justine UHC), succeeding Dr. Guy Rouleau.
Dr. Alain Moreau is a world-renowned research scientist in the area of molecular genetics of pediatric scoliosis. He is fully aware of the major challenges affecting research in Quebec and Canada, and is knowledgeable about the clinical issues faced by university hospital centers. He has published many research articles, and holds several patents. He also has been honoured with numerous awards and distinctions. He holds a B.Sc. in Biology from the Université de Montréal, a M.Sc. in Applied Microbiology from the Institut Armand-Frappier, and a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the Université de Montréal. He did a postdoctoral fellowship at the Protein Engineering Center of the Université de Liège from 1992 to 1993, followed by a second postdoctoral fellowship at the Genetics Unit of the Shriners Hospitals for Children, at McGill University, from 1993 to 1997.
Over the past twelve years, Dr. Moreau has consistently demonstrated his leadership at the Sainte-Justine UHC and has cumulated a number of achievements under the various functions and key positions he has held, namely as owner of the Technopôle rehabilitation project (to open in 2015), associate director of Academic Affairs at the Research Center, research scientist in musculoskeletal disorders, and co-director of the CHUSJ's Department of Dentistry.
Full professor in the Department of Stomatology at the Faculty of Dentistry and in the Department of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine of the Université de Montréal, Dr. Moreau is also Vice Chair of the Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis Advisory Board of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Among his many distinctions, he was named Young Researcher of the Year in Pediatric Research by the Foundation of Stars (2008). He is a four-time laureate of the Yves Cotrel Foundation awards, Institut de France (2002-2012), including the Foundation's first medal. He was also honoured with the Genesis (Biotechnology of Tomorrow) Award by Génome Québec (2008) and is a two-time recipient of Roger-Simoneau awards in Fundamental Science, from the Québec Scoliosis Society (2000 and 2001).
