KITCHENER, ON, Sept. 23, 2013 /CNW/ - Dead white playwrights are on the sidelines in Kitchener this week as Ontario's unique inter-cultural Impact 13 Theatre Festival gets under way.
Impact 13 organizers are determed to present plays reflecting all Canadians, and that means ditching western theatre traditions.
"Indigenous and immigrant stories are very under-represented in the landscape of our industry, and we want to change that," says festival artistic director Majdi Bou-Matar, founder of Impact (International Multicultural Platform for Alternative Contemporary Theatre) and Kitchener's Multicultural Theatre Space (MT Space).
Impact 13 includes The Gaza Monologues by Ashtar Theatre from Palestine, The City of Others by Afro-Colombian artists Sankofa Danzafro, The Global Savages by the Debajehmujig Storytellers of the Wikwemikong First Nation on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, and Myra's Story by Northern Irish playwright Brian Foster.
Impact 13 runs Sept. 24-29, 2013, in Waterloo Region, Ontario. Please visit www.mtspace.ca for details.
