CSA Standards announces recipients of the 2010 Awards of Merit
TORONTO, June 21 /CNW/ - CSA Standards, a leading standards-based solutions organization, today officially announces the recipients of the 2010 Award of Merit. The Award of Merit is an honour bestowed by CSA Standards to individuals that have demonstrated leadership in developing Canadian voluntary standards and who, through technical, administrative, or special standards activities, have advanced the purpose of CSA Standards.
The 2010 Awards of Merit were presented by Brian J. McQueen, Chair of the Board, CSA Group at a special awards ceremony held during the CSA Standards Annual Conference in St. John's, Newfoundland.
"Through their devoted efforts in helping to create a better, safer, and more sustainable world, CSA Standards' technical committee members have made a vast contribution to the lives of Canadians," says Bonnie Rose, President, CSA Standards. "The Award of Merit is CSA's way of acknowledging each recipient's inspiration, leadership, and exceptional dedication to developing standards that impact our daily lives. These volunteers are being honoured for their outstanding efforts in their field."
The 2010 Awards of Merit were presented to the following individuals:
- Neil Cumming, FACI, P. Eng of Richmond, BC receives the Award of
Merit in recognition of outstanding leadership and teamwork, and
knowledge and expertise in the development and application of
concrete standards. Mr. Cumming is Executive Vice President of
Levelton Consultants Ltd.
- Katherine Delves, P. Eng of Ottawa, ON receives the Award of Merit in
recognition of outstanding leadership, inspired vision and persistent
advocacy in the area of energy efficiency. Ms. Delves is Chief,
Standards Development at Natural Resources Canada.
- Dr. Peter Duinker of Halifax, NS receives the Award of Merit in
recognition of exceptional leadership, commitment to consensus-based
standards and extensive knowledge in the area of sustainable forest
management. Dr. Duinker is a Professor and Director of the School for
Resource and Environmental Studies with the Department of Resource
and Environmental Studies at Dalhousie University's Faculty of
Management.
- Dr. Simon Foo of Gatineau, QC receives the Award of Merit in
recognition of extensive involvement and committed leadership in the
development and advancement of standards related to the engineering
risk management of buildings. Dr. Foo is Senior Engineer of Risk
Management with Public Works & Government Services Canada's Real
Property Branch.
- John P. S. Froats, P. Eng of Toronto, ON receives the Award of Merit
in recognition of visionary leadership, agency of change and
dedication to the development and advancement of nuclear standards.
Mr Froats is President and CEO of the CANDU Owners' Group.
- W. (Bill) Hutton of Pickering, ON receives the Award of Merit in
recognition of long-standing involvement, leadership and technical
expertise in the field of plumbing standards for plastic piping. Mr.
Hutton is President at Schwartz Chemical Corporation.
- Carey LaRose of St. Albert, AB receives the Award of Merit in
recognition of outstanding leadership, safety advocacy, and
development and advancement of plumbing and gas standards and codes.
Mr. LaRose spent over 30 years with Alberta Municipal Affairs,
Plumbing and Gas Safety Services, and served for 11 years as the
Administrator/Chief Inspector for Alberta Municipal Affairs, Safety
Services Plumbing and Gas Discipline.
- George Lobay, B.Sc.E.E., P.Eng of Ottawa, ON receives the Award of
Merit in recognition of over 33 years of dedicated service,
leadership and depth of experience and knowledge in the area of
electrical standards. Mr. Lobay is semi-retired after more than three
decades with the Public Service of Canada. Mr. Lobay currently serves
as Quality Manager for the Canadian Explosives Research Laboratory,
responsible for maintaining accreditation to ISO 17025.
- Robert (Bob) Loov, P. Eng., FCSCE, FEIC, FCPCI of Calgary, AB
receives that Award of Merit in recognition of invaluable technical
knowledge, persistence, diplomacy and highly effective leadership in
standards for concrete design and construction. Dr. Loov is retired
from the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of
Calgary. Dr. Loov continues his active involvement in engineering and
standards development.
- Earle C. Morton, P. Eng.of Oakville, ON receives the Award of Merit
in recognition of extensive knowledge and long-standing involvement
in promoting agricultural safety and standards for agricultural
machinery. Mr. Morton is Product Safety Manager with AGCO
Corporation.
- Ted Pelling, P. Eng. of Richmond Hill, ON receives the Award of Merit
in recognition of valued involvement, influential leadership and
technical expertise in the development and advancement of nuclear
standards. Mr. Pelling is President and CEO of Ted Pelling & Company
Ltd.
- Dianne Trudeau, RN of Vancouver, BC receives the Award of Merit in
recognition of long-standing participation, expertise and exemplary
leadership in developing standards for the reprocessing of medical
devices used in health care settings. Ms. Trudeau is the Operations
Leader for Sterile Processing at Providence Health Care, Vancouver,
BC.
The CSA Award of Merit
The Award of Merit was created in 1979 to honour and recognize leadership in Canadian voluntary standards development. Nominations are open to all present or past CSA voting members, as well as former CSA employees that have: served in CSA committee activity or other associated standardization work; showed leadership in technical, administrative, or special committee activities; published papers, or made public addresses, which have been of special benefit to the work of the Association; and have advanced the prestige or interest of CSA Standards.
