Créa-MeD to be the first private medical clinic in Montréal to offer latest colon imaging technology
MONTREAL, March 26, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - Créa-MeD announced today that clients can now benefit from a more convenient and less risky procedure to effectively provide visualizations of the colon, without the use of traditionally invasive procedures or exposure to radiation. This non-invasive alternative to a colonoscopy was recently FDA approved for use on February 3rd, 2014 and is available at Créa-MeD now.
"This medical advancement marks a pivotal moment in screening capabilities and Créa-MeD is thrilled to bring this new diagnostic technology to our clients," said Dr. Luc Bessette, President of Créa-MeD. "March is colorectal cancer awareness month and Créa-MeD would like to reinforce the importance of getting screened, as well as, promote awareness of the many options available in maintaining colorectal health. We couldn't think of a better time to announce this important new service now available at our private clinic."
According to Colon Cancer Canada statistics for 2013, an estimated 23,900 Canadians would be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 9,200 would die from the disease. Overall, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in men and women combined.
"We are encouraging all Canadians to discuss their screening options with their physicians and to better understand that screening means getting checked before there are any signs or symptoms. Our goal is to ensure that all men and women in Canada between the ages of 50-74 are screened for the disease. A simple screening test can save thousands of lives. The PillCam provides an additional option in the appropriate circumstances to fulfill this goal," said Barry D. Stein president of the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada.
About PillCam COLON 2:
PillCam COLON 2 uses a miniaturized camera contained in a disposable capsule that naturally passes through the digestive system, allowing physicians to directly view the entire colon, without sedation or radiation. The PillCam COLON 2 video capsule is equipped with two miniature color video cameras (one on each end), a battery and an LED light source; it measures 12 mm X 33 mm. PillCam COLON 2 is designed to be ingested by the patient and transmits 4 to 35 frames per second for approximately 10 hours to a recording device worn by the patient. Data is transferred from the device to a computer that uses RAPID software to compile the video data and enable the physician to review and report the results of the PillCam study.
