Corporate R&D Spending Jumps 12.6% in the Face of Falling Revenues

Bombardier Inc. Tops Spending Table at $1.9 Billion

TORONTO, Nov. 4, 2013 /CNW/ - Total research spending at Canada's 100 leading companies leapt by 12.6% in Fiscal 2012 countering a combined revenue decline of -3.0%, according to this year's annual Canada's Top 100 Corporate R&D Spenders, released today by Research Infosource Inc., Canada's Source of R&D Intelligence.

Bombardier Inc. moved into first place overall in Fiscal 2012, posting research spending of $1.9 billion, up from $1.3 billion in Fiscal 2011.  BlackBerry Limited fell to second place with $1.5 billion of spending. BCE Inc. retained 3^rd place with spending at $576.1 million.

Top 100 R&D increases were accelerated by large spending increases at Bombardier Inc., Rogers Communications Inc., Encana Corporation, and General Motors of Canada Limited.  Worryingly, however, large spending increases by a few firms overshadowed a combined -3.8% spending decline at 73 other Top 100 firms.
