Combining Acupuncture and Functional Medicine With New Fertility Treatments Increases Pregnancy Rates

VANCOUVER, Sept. 26, 2014 /CNW/ -  Dr. Jason Hitkari MD Reproductive Endocrinologist from Olive IVF, Dr. Lorne Brown Fertility Acupuncturist and Kali MacIsaac ND Naturopathic Doctor from Acubalance for this informative discussion on ways to increase your chances of conceiving and having a healthy baby, in a free public talk entitled "Fertility Options: Your Path to Pregnancy" on September 30, 2014, at the Olive Fertility Centre in Vancouver.

Integration has just been taken to a higher level in Vancouver BC Canada.  Acubalance now has its own dedicated acupuncture rooms onsite at Olive IVF Fertility Centre in Vancouver BC to provide acupuncture before and after IVF transfer. Olive patients can now consult with an Acubalance practitioner onsite at Olive on how to optimize their fertility as they prepare for an IVF cycle. Ten years ago this was unheard of.  Dr. Hitkari explains the sea of change. "Western medicine is beginning to understand the mind-body connection better, and anything that can boost women's overall health, reduce stress, and improve the experience of their fertility journey is something we support."

Dr. Jason Hitkari will be presenting at the free talk on advancements in technology now available in British Columbia that can lead to higher pregnancy and live birth rates. Dr. Lorne Brown and Dr. Kali MacIssac will be sharing natural approaches to optimize your fertility  to increase your chances of conceiving and having a healthy baby whether naturally or through IVF.

According to the studies acupuncture can:

  • help improve pregnancy rates
  • decrease miscarriages
  • reduce ectopic pregnancies
  • increase the number of take home babies for women undergoing IVF
  • Increase blood flow to the reproductive organs
  • Reduce the negative effects of chronic stress

How Does Acupuncture Boost Conception?

There are a number of reasons why acupuncture may increase the chance of conceiving with IVF. One is that acupuncture has been shown to reduce stress hormones and increase feelings of well being. A recent article published in the medical journal Fertility and Sterility, shows that specific stress hormones can interfere with conception.

According to Dr. Paul Magarelli, the author of a landmark study on acupuncture and IVF, "acupuncture may help to regulate stress hormones and help the body return to balance. This balanced state is when a woman's body is the most fertile and she has the best chance of getting pregnant."

In addition acupuncture can improve blood flow to the eggs and the uterine lining enhancing egg quality and improving the thickness and receptivity of the uterine lining. This is crucial for implantation and a healthy pregnancy.

Today many leading fertility clinics in the US are integrating acupuncture programs in their treatment plans. In Vancouver Acubalance  and Olive IVF Fertility Centre have pioneered integration between Eastern and Western fertility treatment, working closely with patients and providing on-site integrative care at Olive Fertility Centre
