Minister Leitch congratulates parties on reaching an agreement to end the work stoppage
OTTAWA, Aug. 22, 2014 /CNW/ - The Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, today congratulated Unifor Local 114 and Cascade Aerospace Inc. on successfully reaching a new collective agreement.
This agreement covers approximately 450 employees working at the Abbotsford, British Columbia plant, whose previous collective agreement expired on March 30, 2014. The employees had been on strike since June 4, 2014.
The parties reached the agreement with the assistance of the Labour Program's Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, which provides dispute resolution and dispute prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the Canada Labour Code.
- Cascade Aerospace Inc. is an aerospace and defence contractor that provides aircraft support programs for original equipment manufacturers, military, government and commercial customers.
- Unifor is Canada's largest private sector union, with more than 305,000 members across the country, working in every major sector of the Canadian economy.
- Over the past five years, 94 percent of collective bargaining negotiations in the federal jurisdiction were resolved without a work stoppage when the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service was involved.
"I am pleased that Unifor Local 114 and Cascade Aerospace Inc. worked together to resolve their labour dispute and end the work stoppage. This agreement allows the employer and employees to pursue their work and contribute to Canada's economy and defence community."
