CLOSED MEANS CLOSED: AORS Sounds the Alarm on Dangerous Road Closure Violations
TORONTO, Oct. 28, 2026 /CNW/ -- A few minutes saved is never worth a life lost. Yet motorists across Ontario continue to bypass road closure barricades, putting municipal road workers, construction crews, emergency responders and the public in danger.
The Association of Ontario Road Supervisors (AORS) is sounding the alarm over an increasing number of dangerous incidents involving drivers entering closed roadways, resulting in damaged vehicles and equipment, as well as life-threatening injuries.
"When a road is closed, it is closed for a reason," said Kelly Elliott, Executive Director of AORS. "These barricades are there to protect people. Driving around them puts everyone at risk, including the driver. We cannot continue to accept this behaviour as just another part of the job for the people who keep our communities safe."
Road closures aren't just for construction.
As Ontario heads into winter, closures may also be necessary because of blowing snow, ice, flooding, fallen trees, poor visibility and other hazardous conditions. A road that appears passable may conceal dangers that motorists cannot see until it is too late.
A barricade is not a suggestion. It is a warning.
AORS is reminding motorists that "Local Traffic Only" generally means access for people who live within, or need to visit a property within, the closed section--not everyone who lives in the municipality. Drivers must respect posted restrictions and follow designated detours.
Ignoring a closure can result in collisions, equipment damage, serious injuries and significant financial consequences. Drivers should never assume their auto insurance will cover every loss if they enter a closed roadway; coverage depends on the policy and circumstances.
Through its "Closed Means Closed" public awareness campaign, AORS is urging drivers to stop bypassing barricades, respect road crews and recognize the people behind every closure.
"Every person behind a barricade is someone's parent, spouse, child, friend or neighbour," Elliott added. "They deserve to do their jobs and return home safely. No shortcut is worth putting another person's life at risk."
Closed means closed. Every time. In every season.
