Clarity Eye Institute Now Offers the Latest Advance In Laser Eye Surgery

The New VICTUS™ Femtosecond Laser Platform, from Bausch + Lomb and Technolas, is Designed to Support Positive Patient Experience and Outstanding Visual Results in Cataract and LASIK Procedures

VAUGHAN, ON, Sept. 3, 2013 /CNW/ - Clarity Eye Institute, the leading comprehensive ophthalmology practice in the Greater Toronto Area, announced today the facility is the first centre in Canada to offer eye surgery for cataracts with an advanced laser system, the VICTUS™ femtosecond laser platform. The versatile VICTUS platform is designed to provide greater precision compared to manual cataract and refractive surgery techniques.¹

July 24^th marks the date the first VICTUS procedure was performed in Canada at Clarity Eye Institute. "With the VICTUS platform, we are able to automate some of the steps that we have commonly performed manually," said Baseer Khan, MD, FRCS(C).  "While we have performed thousands of successful cataract surgeries, the VICTUS platform helps us perform a virtually bladeless procedure, which we feel helps us provide our patients with the best outcomes possible. We're excited to be the first facility in Canada to offer the VICTUS procedure to patients."

The VICTUS platform features a sophisticated, curved patient interface with computer-monitored pressure sensors designed to provide the most comfort during the procedure.  The VICTUS platform also offers real-time, three-dimensional imaging of the eye to aid the surgeons at Clarity Eye Institute in planning and monitoring the operation. The laser itself has a rapid pulse rate that allows the portion of the cataract procedure performed on the VICTUS to be completed in just a few seconds.

About Cataract Surgery 

According to the World Health Organization, there are about 100 million people in the world today who are 80 years old or older.  That number is expected to almost quadruple by 2050.  Aging is the leading cause of eye diseases, such as cataracts.  A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens in the eye.  It also happens to be the leading cause of blindness in the world.  According to the U.S. National Eye Institute, cataract surgery is one of the safest, most common and effective surgical procedures.  Worldwide, over 20 million cataract surgeries are performed annually. Cataract surgery is a simple procedure during which the natural lens in the patient's eye is surgically replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL).

About Femtosecond Lasers

Femtosecond lasers emit optical pulses of extremely short duration in the domain of femtoseconds, as short as one-quadrillionth of a second. These ultra-short pulses do not transfer heat or shock to the material being cut and can make surgical incisions with extreme precision. The technology was developed in the early 1990s at the University of Michigan Engineering Center. The first commercial platform was introduced in 2002 and the original approval was for flap creation during LASIK surgery. Recent platform approvals have been expanded to include additional corneal/therapeutic procedures and cataract applications.

About the VICTUS Femtosecond Laser Platform

The VICTUS platform is one of the only femtosecond lasers in Canada with a license for the creation of a corneal flap in patients undergoing LASIK surgery, anterior capsulotomy during cataract surgery, penetrating arcuate cuts/incisions in the cornea and laser-assisted lens fragmentation during cataract surgery. Bausch + Lomb Technolas (Technolas Perfect Vision GmbH) has been installing VICTUS platforms in leading surgery centers globally since it received CE mark in November 2011, U.S. FDA clearance in July 2012 and Health Canada license June18th, 2013.
