TORONTO, Jan. 21, 2019 /CNW/ - As various issues get worked out, post-cannabis legalization, the Canadian Journalism Foundation's J-Talk Setting the Standard for Cannabis Journalism will explore the challenges journalists face in responsible reporting. The early evening event takes place on February 7 at the TMX Broadcast Centre in Toronto.
"You could say that cannabis is Canada's youngest industry — because of that, there are many more questions to be asked than answers that exist," says Vanmala Subramaniam, business reporter with the Financial Post, who will moderate the conversation.
"That's where the role of journalists come in," Subramaniam adds. "In an industry where stock volatility is prevalent, companies are consistently merging or consolidating, and investors are often overloaded with information (or, indeed, misinformation), it is imperative that reporters do what they do best: tell Canadians what's fact and what's not."
The cannabis industry's influence is far-reaching, affecting public health and safety, policymaking, the economy and talk of a "pot-com" bubble.
