/CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Housing and Renewal Association (CHRA) will testify today at the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development (HUMA) hearing on Bill C-304 to call for an Affordable Housing Policy for
Canada
. Housing is often the single largest household expense - and for a growing number of low and moderate income Canadians the cost of housing has become a significant burden, consuming more than a third and in many cases more than half of all household income. Recent events in the US have underlined the major role of housing in the economy.
"
Canada
must have an affordable housing strategy that meets the needs of all Canadians," said CHRA President,
David Eddy
. "Right now, approximately 1.5 million households in this country do not have either adequate or affordable shelter. Passing Bill C-304 and creating a national housing strategy will be a giant step toward ensuring CHRA's vision that all Canadians have a decent, adequate and affordable place to call home."
"Housing is a key determinant of health, a driver of the economy and a basic human right," said Geoff Gillard, Acting Executive Director, CHRA. "All levels of government must commit to ensuring access to adequate housing for all Canadians as a national priority. The CHRA Affordable Housing Policy we are releasing today clearly outlines the rationale, principles, roles and responsibilities that will create and maintain a sustainable housing system."
