Ceremonies Mark the Float Out of the World's Newest Queen

Cunard's Queen Elizabeth Reaches Major Milestone

<p>SOUTHAMPTON, England, <chron>Jan. 5</chron> /CNW/ -- Special ceremonies at Fincantieri's Monfalcone shipyard near Trieste, <location>Italy</location>, were held today to mark the float out of Cunard's newest liner, <person>Queen Elizabeth</person>. Cunard's President and Managing Director, <person>Peter Shanks</person>, was joined by 79-year-old Florence (Dennie) Farmer, who served as guest of honour at the event. Dennie's husband, <person>Willie Farmer</person>, joined Cunard in <chron>September 1938</chron> and served as Chief Engineer on both the first <person>Queen Elizabeth</person> and <person>Queen Elizabeth</person> 2 until retirement in <chron>October 1979</chron>. Since her husband's passing, Dennie has sailed with Cunard many times and her link with the two previous <person>Queen Elizabeth</person> ships is unparalleled. In recognition of this, Cunard has bestowed Dennie with the honour, in Italian tradition, of being "Madrina" to the third <person>Queen Elizabeth</person>.</p>
