CAZA statement on the publication of the CCAC marine mammal guidelines

OTTAWA, Dec. 23, 2014 /CNW/ - Statement from Clint Wright, President of Canada's Accredited Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) on the publication of the CCAC marine mammal guidelines

"Canada's Accredited Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) welcomes the publication of the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) guidelines on the care and use of marine mammals.

On behalf of Canada's accredited zoo and aquarium community I want to thank and congratulate the CCAC for the development and publication of this important document.

The CCAC is the national agency responsible for setting and maintaining standards for the ethical use and care of animals in science and a recognized world leader in this area.

Developed over many years through a rigorous peer review process, the guidelines address everything from facility management to husbandry to veterinary care and education, and provide an ethical and scientific blueprint for the keeping and care of marine mammals in Canada.

Now that the guidelines have been published, we look forward to working with the CCAC, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) as well as with all provincial regulatory and enforcement agencies to ensure that these guidelines are implemented in a manner consistent with their letter and spirit.

CAZA will immediately begin the process of incorporating these guidelines into its own policies and accreditation standards and inspection frameworks".
