Capilano University poised to cut $2 million from budget
Faculty say cuts will hurt students and programs
VANCOUVER, April 26, 2013 /CNW/ - "In the face of chronic underfunding by the Ministry of Advanced Education, Capilano University is poised to drastically cut a host of programs", says Joanne Quirk, President of the Capilano University Faculty Association. "Over the last 12 years post-secondary institutions in BC have seen a 13% drop in real per-student funding from the provincial government. Today's budget cuts at Capilano are part of that sad legacy," Quirk added.
The cuts will affect programs in commerce, computer science, studio arts, as well as the Squamish campus adult upgrading offerings—in total a 7% cut across all faculties. "The proposed budget that has been tabled by the administration indicates a radical shift away from meeting the needs of the communities that we serve—North Vancouver, Squamish, Sechelt, and Mount Currie", Quirk stressed. "Our Association urges the administration to revisit this proposed budget and to apply consultative budget processes which have served this institution so well over our forty-five year history," Quirk concluded.
