HAMILTON, ON, Jan. 27, 2015 /CNW/ - Just over a year ago, Rocky Hodge and John Dempsey walked onto the set of CBC Television's Dragons' Den to pitch their business, Bomb Energy Drink. What was to follow is the still unfolding phenomenal success story of a Canadian beverage company that dared to charge ahead without the investment of the Dragons.
Bomb Energy Drink was born in 2009 in Hamilton, Ontario as a bag-in-the-box (BIB) product for restaurants, bars, clubs and stadiums. The initial run of BIB's proved a tremendous success. There was an overwhelming positive response to the brand and its premium tasting tart citrus flavour. In addition, Bomb Energy Drink was a third of the price of the world's leading brand. This ignited an expansion push that led to national distribution and operations in Atlantic Canada and British Columbia.
In 2013, Bomb Energy Drink received Government approval to sell the drink in cans, a highly requested format that would allow them to expand into grocery and convenience stores. At this point, owners, Rocky and John, decide to seek an investor to expedite the growth of the cans. "As we searched for an investor, we thought, why not try Dragons' Den?" said Dempsey. A pitch for $300,000 for 20% of the business failed to attract any of the Dragons, but an overwhelming amount of positive attention was garnered from the episode. Find out what happened next.
