Canadian actress readies to take on the Apocalypse… in Hollywood

TORONTO, May 3, 2013 /CNW/ - Toronto actress Jaclyn Fleming has taken on many roles in her stage career, but her latest is taking her to the end of the world. This summer, she stars in LA: Postapocalytica, a comedic look at the lives of four people fighting to survive in post-apocalyptic Los Angeles.

"The show is really a reflection of my kind of humor," says Fleming. "Sometimes a little dark and off-beat, but always trying to find the fun in any situation."

Fleming plays Claudia, a survivor of the apocalypse who, along with three other survivors, try to get their lives back on track after the end of the world. There is only one problem - she and her companions are all zombies.

"The concept for this show is off the wall," says Fleming. "The script made me laugh out loud when I read it."

No stranger to making people laugh herself, Fleming has been a comic force in the Toronto improv and sketch scene for several years, performing in different shows and improv festivals. Her commanding presence and fiery red hair make her easily recognizable on stage.

"To think I wasted all those years wanting to be blond," she laughs.

Her current projects include being a producer and performer with 'Special Features,' one of Toronto's more established improv troupes.  Fleming enjoys this type of performing because it challenges her to think fast while combining her comedic skills with her acting talents.

"We do the sequels to your favorite movies," she said. "On the spot, we make up entirely new plots for established characters. I've played a grumpy Ripley for our Aliens spoof, a sweet zombie for our Halloween show, and even a sad shark, with fins and everything, for our tribute to Jaws."

Along with her improv, Fleming has also appeared in several short films, does voice over work and is constantly taking acting classes to, as she says: "Always working to improve my craft." However, one of her favorite activities has nothing to do with her being on stage.

"I teach improv and acting to children," Fleming said. "There is nothing more rewarding than watching children act for the pure enjoyment of it."

LA Postapocalytica kicks off this summer in Los Angeles.
