FORT ST. JOHN, BC, Feb. 9, 2012 /CNW/ - Fresh off hosting their first high-profile event of the year, the Canadian Open Masters Speed Skating Championship, the Energetic City, Fort St. John, BC, is preparing for what promises to be another truly amazing competition. The 2012 Canadian Age Class Long Track Championship will be held this weekend at the Pomeroy Sports Centre, a truly magnificent multi-sport facility, featuring one of only four indoor ovals in North America as well as two NHL-sized ice surfaces and an indoor running track. The local Elks Speed Skating Club will host skaters from across Canada who have recently qualified in their respective provinces allowing them coveted spots in this national competition.
This world-class facility officially opened in 2010 and has already hosted several Speed Skating Canada competitive events including the very successful Masters Championship held this past weekend. Skaters, including local World Cup skater, Jay Morrison, and others from across Canada took part in the event featuring ages from 30 to the oldest at 84 yrs. The City of Fort St. John's Mayor Lori Ackerman was extremely pleased with the event and "had an opportunity to meet and chat with competitors and at least one of the international judges in attendance". Also recruited for the event was Mark Messer from the Calgary Speed Skating Oval who is best known for creating the "fastest ice in the world" and reputed to be one of the finest icemakers in the business.
The City of Fort St. John is renowned for its rich history in the sport of speed skating developing world-class Olympic skaters like Linda Johnson Blair as well as Denny and Jay Morrison. The City along with the Fort St. John Elks Speed Skating Club is excited to once more welcome athletes and their families from across the country for the 2012 Canadian Age Class Long Track Championship.
