OTTAWA, Jan. 15, 2013 /CNW/ - A Toronto surgeon examining heart disease, a university dean and an international medical educator are among the 2013 national award recipients recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. These awards recognize deserving physicians and surgeons countrywide and are a prestigious part of the Royal College's awards and grants program, which distributes $1 million a year through awards, grants, fellowships and visiting professorships.
"All these award winners are leaders in Canadian health care," says Royal College CEO Andrew Padmos, MD, FRCPC. "Their dedication shapes and improves patient health across Canada and, in some cases, worldwide."
The 2013 national awards recipients are as follows:
- Duncan Graham Award: Dr. Karen Mann, Halifax, NS.
Dr. Mann is a truly global leader in the field of medical education. Throughout her career, she has taught, developed and implemented innovative and effective programs across Canada and internationally. An award-winning teacher and researcher, Dr. Mann is currently advancing medical education at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass. and the University of Manchester in Manchester, U.K.
- James H. Graham Award: Dr. Richard Reznick, Kingston, ON.
Dr. Reznick is unquestionably one of the world leaders in medical education, especially surgical education. His pioneer work includes assessing skills with the development of several tools that are now used worldwide. A worldwide lecturer, he helped transform postgraduate medical education at the University of Toronto, advancing specialty training throughout Canada, and continues pursuing innovation as Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen's University in Kingston.
- Royal College Medal Award in Surgery: Dr. Subodh Verma, Toronto, ON
Dr. Verma is the Canada Research Chair in Atherosclerosis, University of Toronto professor and a scientist at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. His research is working to identify the link between inflammation and atherosclerosis (a hardening of the arteries), which will help develop new medicines and procedures to treat heart disease — one of Canada's leading causes of death.
- Royal College/AMS Donald Richards Wilson Award: Dr. Moyez Ladhani, Hamilton, ON.
Dr. Ladhani is a dedicated and passionate teacher at McMaster University in Hamilton, where he serves as associate professor and deputy chief for the Division of General Pediatrics. The recipient of numerous awards, Dr Ladhani's leadership has helped his training program expand in size, launched new collaborations with programs throughout Ontario and advanced postgraduate medical education in Pediatrics across Canada.
