TORONTO, June 16, 2014 /CNW/ - The Canadian music industry gathered last night at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto to honour Canada's most successful songwriters, composers, lyricists and music publishers at the 25th anniversary SOCAN Awards, the country's largest annual celebration specifically for music creators.
Sponsored by Gowlings, SiriusXM Canada, Stingray Digital Group, KPMG, RBC, and NOW magazine, the SOCAN Awards recognize the accomplishments of Canadian songwriters in Pop/Rock, Dance, Urban, Country, Jazz, Folk/Roots, Classical, Film & Television, and International categories.

Each was on hand to receive their honours, and accepting for Drake were co-writers Noah "40" Shebib and Boi-1-Da. SOCAN members such as Oscar-winning composer Mychael Danna, Serena Ryder, Dragonette, Kathleen Edwards, and Jill Barber also were there to receive their respective awards.
"From Lightfoot to Drake to Serena to Danna to Johnny, Kathleen, Moccio, Hedley and Ruttan - to name only a few - the pure collective genius of Canada's creative musical talent came together amazingly well at this year's SOCANs," said Eric Baptiste, CEO of SOCAN. "Canada's songwriters, composers and music publishers are the lifeblood of a music economy that generates upwards of an estimated billion dollars every year. More importantly, Canada's music creators are responsible for a truly priceless source of our national pride and culture."
Each major achievement award winner received the first-ever presentation of SOCAN's innovative and original trophy, which is also a musical instrument. "The SOCAN" uses five crotales - small, tuned, bronze bell-like instruments made by New Brunswick-based SABIAN. This year The SOCAN is in the key of C, and each year will feature a different selection of notes.
The packed house was thrilled by numerous live performances, including those by 2013 SOCAN Songwriting Prize winner Mo Kenney; "Wrecking Ball" co-writer Stephan Moccio; a tribute to Gordon Lightfoot by Rose Cousins and Whitehorse with versions of "If You Could Read My Mind" and "Sundown" Mia Martina playing her hit, "Burning" and Johnny Reid, Alan Frew, Marty Dodson and Glass Tiger rocking the house with Reid's powerful worldwide smash, "Fire it Up."
The evening was filled with celebration and accolades. SOCAN members receiving songwriting honours included: Jacob Hoggard of Hedley for "One Life," members of Walk Off the Earth for "Red Hands," and Tyler Shaw for "Kiss Goodnight," all in the Pop/Rock category; Mark Pellizer of MAGIC! for co-writing "Inner Ninja" in the Urban category; and Deric Ruttan for co-writing the Blake Shelton U.S. No. 1 hit "Mine Would Be You" in the Country category. Lawrence Gowan received three SOCAN Classic Awards for "A Criminal Mind," "Dancing On My Own Ground" and "(You're A) Strange Animal," each of which have earned more than 100,000 radio airplays over the years.
SOCAN will also recognize outstanding Francophone music creators and publishers at its annual gala in December 2014 at the Hyatt Regency in Montreal.
