Canada's Health Minister to engage international counterparts at G20 Health Ministers' Meeting and World Health Assembly Français
Bringing a Canadian perspective to global health challenges
OTTAWA, May 19, 2017 /CNW/ - Canada is committed to collaborating with international partners to advance global health priorities as an important step towards protecting the health and well-being of Canadians at home and abroad.
The Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, will lead the Canadian delegation to both the G20 Health Ministers' Meeting (HMM) in Berlin, Germany, and the 70th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, Switzerland.
Key discussions at the G20 HMM and the WHA will include improving the management of global health crises, combatting antimicrobial resistance, and strengthening health systems to address the needs of the most vulnerable and promote the health of all. The Canadian delegation will share Canada's perspectives on these issues, seek to learn from the experiences of other participating countries, and work closely with international partners to mitigate global health challenges.
This G20 HMM marks the first discussion on global health at the Ministerial level within the G20. Ministers will participate in a health emergency simulation exercise, which will inform the G20 Leaders' Summit in July, as well as participate in a discussion about fighting antimicrobial resistance on a global scale.
The WHA, which will see the election of a new Director General of the World Health Organization, will also provide Minister Philpott and the Canadian delegation with an opportunity to engage international colleagues directly on a broad range of health topics. Of particular note, Minister Philpott will co-chair a roundtable discussion on mental health with the World Health Organization, co-host an event with Switzerland on addressing attacks on health workers, and provide remarks at an art exhibit on immunization (Immune Nations) co-hosted with Norway.
