MISSISSAUGA, ON, Sept. 15, 2026 /CNW/ -- As Canada works to build a stronger, more resilient economy, investments in clean fuels and emerging energy technologies are helping turn Canadian innovation into economic growth, strengthen energy security and create new opportunities for workers and businesses across the country. By advancing Canadian clean fuels initiatives, we are committing to lowering emissions and investing in our low carbon future.
Today, the Honourable Ruby Sahota, Secretary of State for Combatting Crime, on behalf of the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced $4 million in funding under Natural Resources Canada's Energy Innovation Program Clean Fuels Call for Proposals for two projects in the Greater Toronto Area that will strengthen Canada's clean fuels sector.
The funding will support research and development projects led by Next Hydrogen and CERT Systems Inc.
- Next Hydrogen will receive $2 million for its project, Fabrication and Integration of New High-Performance Electrodes for Next Hydrogen's Advanced 3rd Generation Water Electrolyser Module, to develop a scalable fabrication process and improve the efficiency, performance and cost of electrolyzer modules. This will support the wider adoption of clean hydrogen energy by advancing technologies for low-carbon hydrogen production, which, when powered by low-carbon energy such as wind, solar, nuclear and hydro, the company estimates can achieve emissions reductions of up to 95 percent compared with conventional hydrogen production through unabated steam methane reforming.
- CERT Systems will receive $2 million for its project, Direct Air-to-Ethylene Conversion for Sustainable Aviation Fuels, to advance a process that converts captured carbon dioxide into ethylene, a chemical building block to sustainable aviation fuel. This process could result in an estimated 93.8% reduction in lifecycle emissions when compared with conventional jet fuel.
Together, these investments will accelerate Canada's path to net-zero, advancing domestic innovation, building a competitive clean technology sector and strengthening Canada's position as a global leader in clean fuels.
