OTTAWA, May 11, 2015 /CNW/ - The Standards Council of Canada (SCC) and the Ministry of Economy of the United Mexican States (ME) today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two organizations that reinforces the significant trade relationship between Canda and Mexico. The MOU is an important building block for increased regional standardization and free trade.
Canada and Mexico share a dynamic and prosperous relationship as strategic partners in the Americas and around the world. Formalizing the relationship enables SCC to pursue enhanced cooperation on standards in sectors of strategic importance for Canada such as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) cross border-trade, energy efficiency, transportation and consumer product safety.
This Memorandum of Understanding will enhance bilaterial relations, facilitate harmonization and alignment of cross-border requirements, and promote standards and conformity assessment to the benefit of industry and government in both countries.
"International trade activity has established the need to use as reference the standards agreed by world consensus within international bodies," said Jesús Lucatero, Director of International Affairs for Dirección General de Normas (DGN). This new partnership between SCC and DGN will avoid technical barriers or unfair competition, as well as provide technical assistance to merge more between both Canadian and Mexican systems."
"Standardization is a crucial component of the economies of the region. The SCC-DGN agreement demonstrates our commitment to harmonize standards, testing, and certification procedures between Canada and Mexico to enhance the competitiveness of our respective economies," said SCC CEO John Walter.
