Calgary Farmers' Market supports families in transition

CALGARY , Feb. 10 /CNW/ - The Calgary Farmers' Market (CFM) will be hosting its third Feed the Spirit event today, providing meals for a number of families totalling over 110 individuals. In addition to generous donations made by visitors to the CFM over the Christmas season, the cooperative itself will donate the funds, products and volunteer time necessary to make this event memorable for all guests.

"This event is about creating an opportunity for families in transition to enjoy an evening that is just for them," said Ken Aylesworth , General Manager of the Calgary Farmers' Market. "We hope that by bringing families together to share a meal and experience, we can help foster renewed hope and optimism. We all face transition in our lives and knowing that someone cares can make a big difference."

The event is hosted in the early New Year, as many families find themselves enduring difficult times after the expenses and events related to the holidays. Connections with families are being made via the Bowwest Community Resource Centre, a community based one-stop shop that serves North West Calgary and offers family related resources and support.

Feed the Spirit is being held at the Bowness Sportsplex. Participants will receive a fresh, hot, hearty and healthy meal, catered by CFM vendors, as well as a variety of useful and important gifts. Children's activities and special entertainment will also be part of the evening.

"We are grateful for the opportunity to share this event with our clients," said Joshua McLeod, of Bowwest Community Resource Centre. "Giving them something to look forward to and enjoy is an important break from the daily challenges many of them currently face."

The Calgary Farmers' Market is located in the Currie Barracks and is open for business Friday, Saturday and Sunday year round. In addition to Feed the Spirit, the CFM makes weekly produce donations to local agencies, in excess of 52,000 pounds per year.
