CALGARY, May 3 /CNW/ - Chef Steve Lepine took top honours at the Canadian Culinary Foundation's Culinary Grand Prix held last week in Toronto and now claims the privilege of representing Canada at the 2013 Bocuse d'Or - the world's most prestigious culinary competition for individual chefs.
Five of Canada's finest chefs competed as finalists over the intense two-day competition held April 29 and 30 at Toronto's George Brown College. Each chef was challenged to demonstrate their skills and knowledge with a variety of methods and ingredients. All entries were scored based on taste (30 points) presentation (15) and creativity (5) and were blind judged by a "who's who" of Canadian culinary greats including well-known food critic and author James Chatto and television celebrity chef Lynn Crawford.
"It was an honour to judge a competition of this caliber", remarked Chatto. "All five chefs performed superbly and by the end of the second day it seemed almost too close to call. Steven Lepine has all the technique as well as an artist's eye for presentation. I believe he will represent Canada brilliantly in 2013."
"This was an incredible experience.... to witness, taste and judge some of Canada's top culinary talent," added Chef Crawford. "I have never tasted so much professionalism, passion, expertise and perfection. To me they all have won!"
In the end it was Lepine who took home the honours. A Calgary native, Lepine graduated from the SAIT culinary program in 2001 and currently serves as Sous Chef at the Calgary Golf & Country Club.
