VANCOUVER, May 14, 2018 /CNW/ - Join thousands of people across the province by registering for BC's annual Bike to Work & School Week (BTWW), happening from May 28-June 3.
BTWW is an event for both seasoned bicycle commuters, and those looking to try it for the first time. GoByBike BC Society encourages new riders to participate because it is a great opportunity to experience the benefits of biking first-hand.
Keith Encinas, a new rider during last year's BTWW, explains how you might even surprise yourself. "I never enjoyed cycling but thought I'd try commuting for a week", he says. "I felt good and the weather cooperated so I kept at it." As a result Encinas has now transitioned to commuting to work full time and hasn't insured his car in 3-months! "It changed my life," he exclaimed. "I feel strong and healthy."
Every year there are countless testimonials about how great people feel when they switch from driving to biking. Vicky Issott, a year-round bicycle commuter from the Kootenay's, said that using her bike saves her family thousands of dollars a year because it enables them to have just one car. "I don't need motivation," she says. "It's my transport and I feel great when I use it!"
As an added incentive to participate everyone who registers at www.biketowork.ca and logs at least one trip during BTWW will be eligible for our grand prize –an airfare-included trip-for-2 to cycle along the coast of Portugal (valued at $8 500). This trip, generously donated by Exodus Travels, will have you cycling past beaches, fishing villages and pine forests, stopping only to refuel with seafood, wine, cheeses and pastries.
New registrants are also entered into a prize draw for a $250 gift card to the shop of their choice; and the team leader of this prize winner's team will automatically win the same prize.
Remember, anytime you use your bike for transportation counts during BTWW. This includes trips to the store or visiting friends, so make sure you log every trip!
Last year's event motivated more than 44,000 participants to cycle 1.2 million kilometers and save 240,000 kilograms of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere!
"You don't need fancy clothes or an expensive bike, to participate in Bike to Work & School Week, but it is important to be visible and safe. Check www.biketowork.ca for ICBC's safety tips and review the Bike Sense manual to refresh your memory about the rules of the road and how to share it safely with all users," says Terri-Lynn Gifford, Provincial Program Manager. "We hope you'll discover that it's enjoyable to GoByBike!"
