Borden Ladner Gervais' International Trade and Arbitration Practice Creates European Alliance
TORONTO, Dec. 8, 2014 /CNW/ - Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) has further strengthened its International Trade and Arbitration Group by forming an alliance with GAILEY Law GmbH, a Swiss company managed by noted arbitration counsel and arbitrator Bruce Gailey.
"We are delighted by our alliance with GAILEY Law GmbH. It will allow us to add Mr. Gailey's sterling credentials to our already impressive international arbitration network," said Sean Weir, national managing partner and CEO, BLG. "This alliance will help us continue to provide both our Canadian and international clients, in particular those in Europe, with sound practical solutions to legal and strategic issues arising in all areas of international arbitration."
Mr. Gailey served as chief litigation counsel and vice-president, litigation at Alstom's Thermal Power and Renewable Power Sectors in Switzerland where he oversaw Alstom's disputes around the world, including disputes in local courts and arbitration proceedings. After leaving Alstom he founded GAILEY Law, a Zürich firm specializing in international arbitration and dispute resolution. A solicitor qualified in England and Wales, he brings considerable expertise in construction and infrastructure disputes, in particular in the energy sector, as well as intellectual property and insurance disputes to BLG's already formidable International Trade and Arbitration Group.
"Arbitration is an essential tool for businesses needing to resolve commercial disputes, especially internationally" said Robert Deane, partner and national leader, International Trade and Arbitration Group at BLG. "Mr. Gailey's experience and reputation within the international arbitration community, particularly in Europe, Asia and South America will help us continue to expand our practice in these areas. Mr. Gailey is no stranger to BLG, having begun his career in our Vancouver office with predecessor firm Ladner Downs before relocating to London and then Zürich. We are excited to be working with him again through this new association."
BLG's International Trade and Arbitration Group has the depth and breadth of experience to provide clients with highly integrated legal services capable of meeting all their needs including drafting arbitration provisions, selecting and implementing appropriate rules of procedure, selecting suitable arbitrators, navigating the arbitration process, and determining the most effective and efficient method and strategy for resolving each client's specific dispute or issue. The Group has experience representing private and public corporations, governments and industry groups, which extends across a wide range of sectors including: energy, oil and gas, forestry, telecommunications, software, pharmaceutical licensing and development, insurance, banking, securities, healthcare, maritime and construction.
"I'm excited to collaborate with BLG's team of top ranked international arbitration practitioners," said Bruce Gailey of GAILEY Law GmbH. "I was attracted to the firm's outstanding reputation as leading arbitration counsel in commercial and investment treaty arbitrations nationally and around the world. This is an exciting alliance and I look forward to being part of BLG's international presence."
