129 new projects approved in 48 communities

PETERBOROUGH, ON, May 23, 2017 /CNW/ - The governments of Canada and Ontario are committed to investing in local infrastructure that ensures Canadians and their families have access to modern, reliable water and wastewater services that meet their needs. These investments safeguard the health and well-being of residents, protect waterways and preserve local ecosystems, while also laying the foundation for new economic opportunities to strengthen the middle class across the province.

The Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of Status of Women and Member of Parliament for Peterborough-Kawartha, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable Jeff Leal, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and Member of Provincial Parliament for Peterborough, on behalf of the Honourable Bob Chiarelli, Ontario Minister of Infrastructure, and His Worship Daryl Bennett, Mayor of the City of Peterborough, today announced that a new project in Peterborough has been approved under the Government of Canada's Clean Water and Waste Water Fund. The federal government is providing up to 50 per cent of funding for this project—over $2.6 million. The provincial government is providing up to 25 per cent of funding for this project—just over $1.3 million of total eligible costs, and the City of Peterborough will provide the balance of funding.

Thanks to this investment, residents of Peterborough will benefit from modifications and improvements to the Peterborough Waste Water Treatment Plant. Aging mechanical structures in the older primary and secondary clarifiers will be replaced along with other components crucial to improving sludge management and hydro consumption. This project is essential to keeping our waterways clean and our communities healthy and livable.

In addition to this project, $24.7 million in federal funding for 128 water and wastewater projects will benefit 47 other communities across Ontario.

This investment is part of an agreement between Canada and Ontario for the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund.

Quotes

"Investing in water and wastewater treatment infrastructure is essential to maintaining a healthy environment and providing access to clean, reliable drinking water. The Government of Canada is working with provinces, territories and municipalities across the country to support important projects like the one in Peterborough, which ensure that Canadian communities are healthy and sustainable now and for years to come."

The Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of Status of Women and Member of Parliament for Peterborough-Kawartha, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities

"Building and maintaining high-quality water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure is an essential part of building liveable communities. This announcement demonstrates the Province's commitment to partnering with municipalities in order to deliver the public infrastructure Ontarians need. I am pleased that these projects will contribute to enhanced quality of life in Peterborough and the surrounding area for years to come."

The Honourable Jeff Leal, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and Member of Provincial Parliament for Peterborough

"Our future as a healthy community with a high quality of life depends on maintaining a clean source of water. The City of Peterborough is partnering with the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario to undertake significant upgrades to our wastewater treatment facility to help ensure to the very best of our ability that the water we put back into the river continues to be as clean as the water that we draw from the river."

His Worship Daryl Bennett, Mayor of the City of Peterborough
