B.C. to host CHBA national convention
Housing affordability and skilled-trades shortage top issues for nation's homebuilders
VICTORIA, March 19, 2018 /CNW/ - Housing affordability, a shortage of skilled workers and building innovation are among the issues before this week's annual conference of the Canadian Home Builders' Association.
Builders, renovators, developers and other housing experts are in Victoria this week sharing ideas to improve and strengthen Canada's housing industry.
Key national issues include the rising costs of skilled labour – partly due to minimum-wage increases in Ontario, B.C. and Alberta; housing availability, and unprecedented demand at affordable market rates. Delegates also want a better understanding of new tax-measures unveiled in the latest provincial B.C. budget.
There are both supply measures to encourage construction of new homes of all types, along with measures to decrease demand through a suite of housing-related taxes.
"All eyes are on B.C., where we are waiting for key details on the impacts to vacation homes and land that will be used for development," said Neil Moody, the CEO of the provincial chapter of the Canadian Home Builders' Association. (CHBA) "This week's meetings are a great opportunity for members of our association to get together from across the country, roll up our collective sleeves, share ideas and discuss key issues in residential construction."
According to the CHBA, 69 per cent of Canadians own their own homes, however, home-ownership is still a wish for four out of five millennials.
The residential construction industry employs more than one-million people and generates $138.3-billion in economic activity
