BASF Canada recognizes Saskatchewan grower, Dan Flynn, for his commitment to agriculture
MISSISSAUGA, ON, June 4, 2015 /CNW/ - BASF recognizes Saskatchewan grower, Dan Flynn, for his commitment to agriculture. The company recognizes growers for their leadership in the industry through a series of grower profiles.
Flynn farms over 13,000 acres of lentils, spring wheat, barley, field peas, chickpeas and canola in Beechy, Saskatchewan. Of those 13,000 acres, about 5,000 acres are Clearfield® lentils. Flynn grows Clearfield lentils and uses the Clearfield Production System because it offers one-pass weed control, which results in fewer operations in the field and less impact on the environment.
"Growing a large acreage base of lentils requires a wide application window to control weeds," said Flynn. "The Clearfield system gives us a solid two-week window to cover the acres. I have been really pleased with the Clearfield system for growing lentils."
Flynn understands that success in farming means being prepared for the unknown. He thrives on the risk of farming and appreciates that you always have to be prepared for the unexpected.
"Mother Nature can throw curveballs at any time and often when it is least expected," Flynn explains. "The best way to be prepared for those curveballs is by using reliable crops, like Clearfield lentils."
"We had some extreme weather come through that levelled off the field, and we still managed to pull off a 21-bushel crop," said Flynn. "I think 15 years ago we would have been happy to get a 25-bushel crop on a perfect year, so it really shows the power of the genetics of a Clearfield lentil today. Without new products and new modes of action coming down the pipeline, Mother Nature finds a way to beat us up pretty quickly."
"I have been very happy with my relationship with BASF and growing Clearfield lentils," said Flynn. "As a Saskatchewan farmer, the only lentil I would grow is the Clearfield lentil."
"BASF appreciates hearing positive stories from growers like Dan, who are adapting to modern farming practices," said Danielle Eastman, Brand Manager Western Herbicides and Clearfield at BASF Canada. "BASF is always investing in research to develop innovative products that can help growers prepare for the future."
